What optional software modules are available for Scala 5?

Optional Scala Designer and Player 5 EX Modules

Serial EX Module (comes with Scala 5)

The Serial EX module allows you to easily send and receive data from any RS232 port on a Designer or Player system. It has a relatively user friendly authoring GUI, and is generally intended for low speed serial communications.

Video Control EXes Module (sold separately)

The Video Control EXes  module contains 3 separate video EXes for controlling video switchers, VCRs, Laser Disc, DVD, and Leightronix control devices.

Switcher EX Module
The Scala Switcher EX allows you to use a variety of audio/video switchers, controlling them directly with a Designer 3 script. Switchers currently supported by this EX include Adrienne AEC-1; Digital Processing Systems RS-2800 4 × 1; Kramer VS-401 4 × 1, VS-402 4 × 2, VS-801 8 × 1, VS-802 8 × 2, VS-601XL 6 × 1, VS-808XL 8 × 8, 16 × 16, 4 × 4 models; PESA Bobcat; Sigma SCI-210, SCI-8 × 8, SLX; and Vicon VPS-1300.

VCR EX Module
Similar to the Switcher EX, the Scala VCR EX allows you to control a serial-equipped videocassette recorder, videocassette player, or laserdisc player from within a Scala Designer 5 script. Models currently supported by this EX include JVC professional models with RS-232; Panasonic AG5700, AG7350 with RS-232; Sony UVW models with RS-232; RS-422 controlled VCRs such as the Sony DSR-60 (with Addenda Electronics 2/3 or 2/8 RS-232 > RS-422 adaptors); Pioneer laserdiscs with RS-232; Generic RS-422; and the Pioneer 7400 DVD.

Leightronix EX Module
Bundled with the VCR and Switcher EXes is the Leightronix EX. This EX allows control of several interface devices produced by Leightronix Inc. including the MINI-T-Net, MINI-T-PRO, PRO-8, and PRO-16. The Leightronix devices connect to a wide variety of serial controlled VCRs, and provide a combination of switcher functions and VCR transport control, making them highly versatile in a budget video production environment.

TV Tuner EX Module (sold separately)

The TV Tuner EX supports use of various TV tuner or video capture add-on cards. This allows for controlling TV Tuner hardware that accepts video input such as cable, antenna, composite, and s-video. The size, position, video source, and channel selection for the TV Tuner display can be controlled within a Designer 5 script.

For recommended TV tuner and capture cards please see the following FAQ:

CORIOgen EX Module (sold separately)

The CORIOgen EX module controls the TVOne CORIOgen overlay genlock. Great for video applications for overlaying text and images on the video output of a Scala 5 Player.

Weather EX Module (sold separately)

The Weather EX Module supports the use of the Davis Instruments Vantage Pro™ and Weather Wizard III® weather stations. This allows the display of weather information from a Davis weather unit within a Scala Designer 5 script. This information is gathered electronically from the weather station, which is connected to the computer through a serial port.

The data received from the weather station is written to variables, the values of which can be displayed on a script page. The variables update in real time as they change, so the script becomes like a remote terminal for the weather station. The variable values can also be written to a file that can be distributed to additional Players.

Queue EX Module (sold separately)

The Queue EX module provides device control for the Q-Matic Corporation Q-Win queuing system and the Nemo Queue queuing system. The Queue EX module EX is installed on a Scala 5 Designer or Player system that is connected via a serial port to the queuing system hardware. The output of that system

is displayed on monitors situated where those in the queues can see them while waiting for the next available counter.

The Queue EX works by reading data transmitted by the queuing system hardware, and placing the data into special Scala 5 variables that can be displayed and manipulated in a script in real time responding to the queuing system hardware.

Verification EX Module (sold separately)

The Verification EX module allows a Scala 5 Player to continually play the same content where communication with Content Manager has been removed for a long extended period. A Player hardware dongle is provided with the Verification EX module.

Optional Scala Content Manager 5 EX Modules

Playback Audit EX Module (sold separately)

Each Scala Player reports a play log of ads that ran on the Player. These play logs are XML based, allowing us to support the new POPAI standard and other third party applications (e.g.: DS-IQ). The Playback Audit EX Module

offers simplified generation of proof-of-playback

affidavits, saving you time and eliminating costly delays in extracting detailed billing information from your Scala network.

Publish Automation EX Module (sold separately)

Publish Automation EX Module allows third party applications creating Scala scripts to control changes to the Scala network. Connecting third party tools to your Scala network gives you added flexibility and wide range of additional services to choose from.

Broadcast Server EX Module (sold separately)

Broadcast Server allows users to broadcast multimedia content created with Scala Designer or other industry-standard applications via satellite and IP multicast networks to hundreds or thousands of sites. It is an expansion to Scala Content Manager that makes content distribution easy for large installations by allowing multiple players to be addressed with a single transmission.

Template Composer EX Module (sold separately, comes with starter kit)

Templates can be created in Scala Designer, allowing the creative content designers (graphics artists) to create the “look and feel” of a channel. From the Scala Content Manager web front end, any user can fill in forms that drive the predefined templates from Scala Designer. No additional software needs to be installed on the users desktop since the forms can be filled in from any Internet-connect computer. Data-driven content templates allow even your least design-savvy employee to create great looking displays.
