SOUTHAMPTON - Over the past few months, P&O Cruises has been installing a high end digital video and information display system for the playback of full length movies to the cabins of the Adonia, Aurora, Oceana, and Oriana. These magnificant ships now boast the power of Scala's InfoChannel 3 software suite which allows fully managed digital systems for a combination of entertainment and passenger information. Scheduling and playback of full length videos with integrated graphics and text are controlled through Scala's Designer 3 authoring package.

Resiliance and quality have been maintained thanks to the 24/7 performance of Scala's content management software and MPEG-2 movie hardware decoders. The systems are RAID equipped and use Scala InfoChannel Network Manager's health monitoring functions to enable P&O to keep an eye on the status of their new network without needing to check every screen.
Historically, P&O used VHS tapes and manual changeovers to provide passenger movies. This has now been completely replaced by an InfoChannel network which has saved money and automated the once-tedious process. In fact, the systems are even managed via satellite from P&O's Southampton headquarters -- testament to the flexibility and reliability of the narrowcasting network powered by Scala software.
Founded in 1987, Scala pioneered the cable TV industry with software and services to allow users to create localized channels inexpensively. Today, Scala has grown to lead the corporate communications, retail dynamic signage, and interactive kiosk industries as well. With an unrivaled software suite to handle authoring, networking, monitoring, and logged playback, Scala has been the choice of tens of thousands of customers worldwide. Built on reliable and flexible network architecture, Scala software can support nearly any existing infrastructure from dial-up to LAN to Wi-Fi to satellite and terrestrial-based multicast networks. Scala's powerful and efficient store-and-forward design allows the control of unique content on a single cable headend or thousands of remote displays or kiosks from a single desktop PC without the constraints of streaming video.
