May 5, 2010 – West Chester University Sees Digital Signage as Daily and Emergency Communication Tool

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester University (WCU) of Pennsylvania, part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, has installed a campus-wide digital signage network that allows department heads across campus to distribute custom content to nearby screens. Additionally, WCU has integrated its emergency alert and campus text notification systems into the network’s software platform, allowing urgent messages to override content on all screens in case of emergencies.

WCU worked with audiovisual system integrator Visual Sound Inc. (Broomall, Pa.) to design and build the network. Working with Visual Sound, WCU chose Scala as its software platform because it enables departments to design and schedule their own content, and it integrates with the emergency service.

“After extensive review and testing, Scala software was the most suitable option for what we were looking for. It integrated well with our systems, and it was the most user friendly” said Teresa Hudson, Tech Fee Support Specialist at WCU.

WCU designs and manages digital signage content and trains university personnel on how to create and upload their content using Scala Content Manager. Visual Sound supports WCU’s management of the technical aspects of the network, including the hardware.

The network currently includes 22 displays in 13 campus locations, and the project continues to expand.
