“We take considerable interest in the evolution of the concept of multimedia in all its forms, and strive to be the central repository of all resources.”Welcome to one of the largest and most complete multimedia directories on the Internet. Scala has taken on the duty of maintaining the site that originated at GMD: German National Research Center for Information Technology. We take considerable interest in the evolution of the concept of multimedia in all its forms, and strive to be the central repository of all resources. We try to keep pace with the shifting interpretation of the concept of multimedia. To see the directory as one long page, click here.

The multimedia field has changed immensely since the original GMD directory was created, much of the interesting bits moving out from the research facilities into the open source, commercial and consumer worlds. What was unthinkable when the directory was created has become commonplace today. Through convergence and ubiquitous media, multimedia has entered our lives. The barriers for entry are much lower, and what can be achieved by as single person is much greater. There seems to be new products popping up every day. So, in order to make Scala's multimedia index the most comprehensive on the Internet, we are allowing visitors to create entries. Each person who makes additions to the multimedia directory can edit their own listings.

We will not attempt to create a timeline history of multimedia here, because another company named MetroMemetics is doing that.

The rules to add entries to this directory are very simple: there is no personal promotion in the multimedia directory (Scala provides plenty of other opportunities for personal promotion). Every listing must be for a company, product, organization, or resource. Attempt to categorize the listing properly. Only define new categories if the product does not clearly fit into an already existing one. We will attempt to review and release changes made to the multimedia directory on a weekly basis, at which time the static HTML version will be created. It is OK to list competitors to Scala, but Scala reserves the right to edit listings. Please make the job easy by avoiding marketing hype, and by using matter-of-fact language whenever possible.
