publishing internet-CD & updating

Posted: 5 Aug 99 15:18:02 GMT -- by mail. Subject: publishing internet-CD & updating

If I create an internet-cd and at a later date
upload a newer version of the published script to
the server, how does the end users IPLAY software
know its an updated version? Let me explain. I
want to produce a show that consists of 30
screens (jpegs) and use the file names
slide01.jpg, slide02jpg etc. When I revise the
show at a later date can I call the replaced
screens the same name as the screen I'm updating
or do I need to name it differently as in
slide01.jpg gets replaced with new image called
slide01-2ndQ.jpg. I know this probably sounds
confusing but, I'm concerned with the update
feature in IPLAY seeing an image file with the
same name and not downloading it. One other
thing, does the name of the published script need
to remain the same or do you change the name as
updates are made. I'm assuming you keep the same
name and the update looks at the creation date to
see if the file has been updated. Any info would
be greatly appreciated.
PS. I called Scala tech support for answers and
never got a call back. WHAT'S UP!

As long as you have modified the image and it on your hard drive have gotten
a new size or timestamp than your earlier image you should be fine. What
normally happens is that you either modify the background in a paint program
and when you then save the image it will get a new timestamp. Another way to
update one of the backgrounds in a script is to replace it from within the
Design Background menu by selecting the "File:" button and picking the file
that you want to replace the existing file.

In both cases the files will be updated on the server when you republish the
script.

The only problem I know can exist is if the receiving computer is behind a
proxyserver or other sort of server that will cache the files locally. If
you replace an image in a script with one that have the exact same name and
then publish, then the player that is behind this proxyserver or other
server that caches files can get the cached file instead of the new file
when it do a update.

You can very well have multiple versions of the same script on your script
authoring machine. When the script is published, it will not use the local
name of the script anyway. Just note that your "archived" scripts may be
outdated if you at a later stage remove any of the files that is used by the
script.

When you publish a script as a channel, then the channel drawer will have a
file that is named index.cdf. This file lists all the files that is used by
the script. It also lists the datestamps for the files. When a player is
checking to see if a script have been updated, then it will compare the
local version of the .cdf file with the .cdf file that it finds on the web
server. If they do not match it will use the .cdf files to determine which
files it needs to download.

Note! This is how I belive this is working. I do not guarantee that my
explanation is 100% correct.

Hmmm. Strange. Try call again.
