Player 5 License Troubles :(

Wednesday, 08/15/2007 -- by OMPTech. Subject: Player 5 License Troubles :(

In the Content Manager 5 instruction manual there is a 3 sentence paragraph on page 30 devoted to describing the fact that the player must obtain its license from Content Manager 5. (There is no longer a dongle issued for each player license) Great except that there is no explanation of how or when the player obtains its license. There is no help for what to do if your player fails to get its license. There is no explanation of how to tell if your player has received its license or not. There is no explanation of how to force your player to obtain its license. Is anyone else having any issues with this? Is anyone else completely in the dark as I am regarding this issue? Anyone care to enlighten me on this critical issue which is preventing us from being able to use Scala 5 altogether? Thanks in advance.

The IC5 Players obtain their licenses as a part of their communications with the Content Manger5. If the Player is obtaining content and reporting Health Monitoring Status/Log files--then the Player will periodically and automatically renew its licensing as required.

There is nothing to do or force. If the Player is working and in communication with its CM5--then it will renew as required,

Thanks for the reply. You hit on our exact problem - our player is not obtaining content or reporting any health status. It is "enabled" with a green check mark but so far shows only "Never reported" as its status. IC3 still works just fine using player-direct FTP so I know the 2 machines can communicate. I've made sure that my CM5 install has the correct IP address for the CM machine. (both machines are using static public IP addresses and have internet connectivity) I'm using CM direct for communication. The player is set to "Pull from CM" and it sees its network name and player name correctly so I know the player can connect to the CM machine. At this point I'm at a total loss as to why the CM is not seeing the player. I have also tried using player-direct FTP but with no success. The instruction manual does not do a very good job of giving a simple step by step checklist for everything that is needed to successfully deliver a plan to the player. Is there anything obvious that I may be overlooking that is preventing my CM from seeing the player? Thanks

P.S. In IC3 the method of communication and delivery of scripts from NM to player was fairly simple and obvious. It was also explained reasonably well in the manual. With IC5 the whole process seems much more complicated, convoluted and not well explained in the manual.

Friday, 08/24/2007 -- by Scala Technical Support. Subject: Troubleshooting HTTP

Until the Player has received its first plan it will not know about its license. Here are some troubleshooting tips for Content Manager Direct (HTTP).

1. Check in Content Manager / Settings / License Status to see if the License file has been downloaded.

2. Check to see if the Content Manager and Player are using the current Release. In Content Manager / Setting / DB Config if prior to Release 2. In Settings / Server Settings / System Information after Release 2. In the Player 5 Configuration / Info tab / 2nd line. You can get the current release from www.scala.com/updates. Current is Release 2.06.

3. Select in Content Manager / Network / Players / select a Player, and select Generate Player Plan. Check Content Manager / Network / Network Monitor for Player 'New Plan revision downloaded' after Generating Player Plan. May need to wait a minute.

4. Check in Content Manager / Network / Network Monitor for the Player's 'Check for new plan revision'. If not goto Step 5. If yes then go to Step 10.

5. On the Player check to see if the Player Transmission Client is running. Gray and yellow icon in the Player's System Tray.

6. Check in InfoChannel Player 5 Configuration to see if able to connect to Content Manager Player when selecting 'Refresh'. If so, the Player should load the Network name, and Player's UUID number. If not go to Step 7.

7. Connect in Internet Explorer to http://HostNameOrIP:PortNumber to see if you get the Content Manager Tomcat web page. If no connection check to see if the Apache Tomcat Service is running. Also check firewalls, routers, and anti-virus to see if the web port is blocked.
Example http://192.168.100.1:8080

8. PING Content Manager's HostName or IP Address in the Player's Command Prompt. This is a test to see if you can talk to the hostname or IP Address. If not check network connection, and cabling. Example:
PING 192.168.100.1

9. TELNET Content Manager's HostName or IP Address with the web port number in the Player's Command Prompt. Example: TELNET 192.168.100.1 8080. This is another test for testing the web port.

10. Check Incoming Messages folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Scala\InfoChannel transmission Server 5\Network\Incomming Messages. If there are .XML files then the Content Manager Transmission Server is not processing them. This can be due to no Content Manager License, or a Service not running. Also try rebooting.

11. Check the Scala InfoChannel Transmission Server, and Scala InfoChannel Support Server Services to see if both are Started and set to Automatic. Go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services.

12. Try rebooting.

13. Check the Transmission Server Service IC.log for errors.

14. Check the Player IC.log for errors.

15. Check in Content Manager / Network / Players / Player's Properties / Configuration that Content Manager is selected.

Many thanks to tech support for this posting. I'm sure the information contained here will be helpful to others having similar questions. It turns out the Player Transmission Client (PTC) was not running. Since we are still in the testing phase with IC5 we had not set up the player and PTC apps to launch automatically on boot up. The player has now successfully received its first plan and is now reporting back to the CM. I have decided to launch a new thread for my follow up questions. I am experiencing problems with Release 2 of the player and CM and would like tech support to address those issues. Thank you again and please do look for my new post on "Problems with Release 2 of IC5".
