Panasonic split screen problem

Thursday, 11/22/2007 -- by Roger. Subject: Panasonic split screen problem

We have recently purchased six (6) Panasonic TH42-PH10UK 42" plasma monitors for installation on some ferry boats. The plan is for each screen to show movies and adverts in a 'split-screen' mode. Therefore we would have a DVD player as one input and a PC as the other, each using up half of the screen (side-by-side). The screens are mounted landscape.

The problem is that when the plasma is setup for split-screen mode, there is approximtely 3.5" of grey border at both the top and bottom of the screen, with the two display areas sandwiched between them. Is there any way to get rid of these two borders and use of more of the screen real estate? Has anyone tried a setup like this before? Please feel free to comment....

The problem is that the splitting of the screen is a Panasonic function and you cannot change it, but if you put the DVD out in a zone ( with a tuner tv ) of Infochannel5 you can play on the total screen.

What Jiemde said. It's the same with the big sharp's I have too.
(no infochannel 5 here yet)

You might be able to use P in P, but I am pretty sure that defeats
the purpose of having a big screen.

Fortunately, our content is poster shaped and I can now control sharp and sony throuth the serial port. so we don't have this problem ... yet!

I am wondering...could I :
1. Resize the adverts to, lets say, 320 x 480
2. Get the TV Tuner EX and a Hauppauge PVR 150 (etc")
3. Connect the DVD player thru the Hauppauge

and somehow be able to show the two 'zones' side by side, with each zone being 320 x 480?

Has anyone been sucessful with a setup such as this? Let me nkow :)

Have you attended product training?

This is almost a "too basic" topic.

Its kind of in the "Reason the Product Exists" area.

Two Frames: TV-Clip in one. Script in the other. Done.

Roger,

the point is not "if" this setup will works. It works. But how will it look like?

You are speaking about two "zones" each 320x480 side by side. This results in a full page of 640x480.

Now, there are several problems you will have:
1. The screen res you defined with 640x480. 4by3 aspect on a 16by9 monitor. Why?

2. if you place a TVclip (or DVD input) to one "zone", you will have three choices: a) displaying the full video at maximum width? Then you will have a border area at top and at bottom. b) Stretch the video to maximum heigth? Then you will have a full picture inside your "zone" with some very funny aspect ratio ;-) c) maximize your video to full screen with aspect ratio staying intact? Then you will see only one half of the video, which half will you prefer to see?

You see, neither of these set ups will making you happy. Rethink your concept

You are using allready an excellent monitor. The screen has 16 by 9 with minimum of 848 by 480 pixel screen res. Try to use something at 1360 by 768.

Now, if you want to have it set up e.g. as a two "zone" display, define the "left" area used by TVtuner/DVD and give it a pixel resolution of 1024 x 768 (this, the DVD will still be displayed in correct 4by3 aspect ratio on a 16by9 monitor). Now, with your horizontal screen res set to 1360 you have a playground for your ads at 336 by 768.

You can easily change that layout to make it more powerful e.g. with three zones or 20 zone, if you want.

Have fun

Cheers,
Thomas
