I am using Scala IC3 to run a display that is over 4000 pixels wide. I have seen references to MPEG II being encoded at resolutions higher than 1920 pixels wide and I wonder what application might do that?
Adobe Aftereffects won't allow output this high in any codec under Windows. Things work fine in Quicktime, but that is unfortunately not an option.
Is there a codec for high resolution movies that will work with IC3?
Thanks!
Matt
Even QuickTime7/MPEG-4/H.264 has limits. [see: http://www.m4if.org/resources/profiles/index.html]
Most of the various MPEG-# CODEC's have maximum resolutions that are defined by their appropriate committees.
The funny thing--these days the only common CODEC's that permit "unconstrained" encoding are MPEG-1 and MotionJPEG. All of the other CODEC's have limitations imposed on them--for good reason--compatibility. The "Profile" system ensures that all compliant playback devices will actually display the content as intended.
In any case--you can make MPEG-1 and Motion JPEG files up to 16K by 16K--everything else tends to be limited to 2Kx2K or something similar.
Pegasus Imaging makes a rather good Motion-JPEG CODEC for Windows.

After doing some research I have found that MPEG1 is limited to 4095x4095 (wikipedia), but every codec I tried had a much lower limit. Pegasus Imaging's MJPEG codec works, but I have not been able to get adequate frame rates, T playback trouble could be limited by my video card since the CPUs are not working all that hard.
I have an Nvidia Quadro NVS 4400 running three 1600x1200 displays.
Thanks for the response!
Matt
I am not aware of an NVS 4400 product--FX4400--but not NVS--all of the NVS products that I am aware of have ### product numbers.
They are very low end GPU's--basically professional versions of the lower end GeForce4MX parts and the lite.
The FX4400 is a high end device--however it only supports two outputs.

Your right, it is a Quadro NVS 440, sorry about the extra zero
MJPEG compressed AVIs work as long as they are added to an existing page. Adding them as files causes them to play on only one display (the other displays show the first fram of the movie.)

Microsoft supplies a very non-optimized M-JPEG codec as part of the bundle contained within QUARTZ.DLL.
Have you installed the PEGASUS MotionJPEG CODEC on your Playback machine?
--JSS
I don't have my player machine yet, it will be here next week. The designer/net manager PC and the player PC will be identical so I hope that I won't have any surprises.
The guy I talked to at Pegasus Imaging told me that their MJPEG codec is also non-optimized. It was put together by an engineer for testing purposes and became a commercial product due to popular demand. This codec does not take advantage of multiple CPUs, and does not take advantage of newer hardware media acceleration features of modern CPUs.
I will try the Microsoft one to see if the results are better or worse than the Pegasus Imaging codec.
