Configuring scala5 Cm and Player

Monday, 07/30/2007 -- by Greg Cameron. Subject: Configuring scala5 Cm and Player

I'm new to scala, but the software is confusing as any i've ever seen. I've installed the CM, designer and player CM and designer on one machine and the player on another. I've gone thru the documetation and I guess what I really need is a information architecture diagram of how this is supposed to work. I can not get the two machines to talk to each other using any of the 3 player types available. Has anyone else run into these problems?

Scala, Inc. offers training classes both on the U.S. East and West Coasts--Philadelphia & LA--on a monthly basis. The European Sales group also has Training Classes on a monthly or bi-monthly basis in the Netherlands.

Scala's products are generally only to be sold on a "value added" basis.

Contract your reseller. You reseller is supposed to provide "Value Add"--which generally means that, to the inexperienced customer, the product offered is a complete installation/turn-key deployment.

If this was offered to you--and you or your organization declined such an installation to "save costs"--well now you are faced with the basic facts of life. This is a non-trivial, very flexible, comprehensive product that does require some vendor-product-specific experience and IT knowledge to correctly implement.

The content and tone of your reply was less than what I would expect from someone in a report role. I wouldn't describe this as turn key software. The documentation it comes with is pathetic. The quick start guide for the player is nothing but 12 pages of a End User License agreement. I'm a very technical person, responsible for many enterprise wide systems. I wasn't involved in the purchasing or selection of the product and do not know the history other than we purchased it from a reseller. When I try and test the connection from player to the InfoChannel content manager I get a windows error 2EFD. What I'd like to see is an architecture diagram of how this is supposed to work.

Interesting...

Me too have some problems with CM and Player... for all (maybe too late) DO NOT EXECUTE AUTOMATIC OPTIMIZATION application from the Player installation... if someone execute one automatic optimization can return (but some problems remains on the Windows)... if execute one automatic + one personalization optimization, this run however the automatic and not the personalization :)
...the solution of that? some works in Windows registry but is better format c:
The optimization is a good idea but must be with some options in first plan like "Do you want that the icon on the desktop disappear?", "Yes" or "Not" and must have a 'restore function' completely working and tested.

For this reason I formatted my principal PC after I installed and tried for some days CM, Player and Designer...I just wanted to tested with my PC and not dedicate the PC for the rest of the life...

CM, here too I have some great problems... (after format, upgrade Windows and sw) I installed the CM into PC but it didn't ask me the USB key insertion... so I look into the Quick Start Guide (point 20 from page 4, last with really utility from 20 pages) and I inserted the key into the USB port when the installation is finished... the led was ON... but when the ALL installation was ended and open my browser with http://localhost:8080/ContentManager (is the correct address) told me "Page not found"...
...i try to uninstall the CM, Apache, Postgres, MPEG ecc. and execute a new installation with another USB port... again without asking me "Insert USB key" alert... the same results... more times....

I find another PC, and execute there the CM but I inserted the USB key before the alert "Insert NOW the USB key"... when I see that I unplugged and plugged into another USB port... same result like first PC...

Amazing!

I find another PC (the 3rd) and here is OK, I plugged the USB key when I see the alert...
but this PC is not that 'great' for my work, for CM, Designer, Photoshop, ecc.

My question... now I must format all 2 PC for installing again the CM ?
(have only another 15 days for test or less...)

ps. sorry for my English but I not live in U.S. or Netherlands...
Thanks again!

Friday, 11/23/2007 -- by Cristian Balan. Subject: remove driver USB key?

The solution for the CM installation can be removed again CM, postgres, apache and the USB KEY DRIVERS ?
Where do I find the USB key drivers files?

Friday, 11/23/2007 -- by Cristian Balan. Subject: uninstall guide

I found this 'solution'
http://www.scala.com/infochannel-content-manager-5-faq/uninstall-content-manager...
This time, ask me from USB key, I plugged the key and wait install on the Win and then push OK... same results... PAGE NOT FOUND.... :((

At step 2 from guide, I not find any other user or "postgres" user in User Accounts.... there is only my user account...

Monday, 11/26/2007 -- by John Schilling. Subject: "Page Not Found" has nothing to do with the USB Key

Even if you don't have a Dongle attached--you will still get a HTTP page. [which will tell you to insert the HASP Dongle!]

If you have this problem as you are describing--there is something fundamentally wrong that you are missing.

What I would think of 1st:

(1) You are attempting an install from an Account that is not a member of LM\Administrators.

(2) You have a 3rd Party AntiVirus/Firewall solution installed and the ports are being blocked

(3) You have other instances of Apache/Tomcat installed on your system and they are conflicting.

Since you did not provide any details w/r to the machine you are attempting this installation on--there is a limited amount of assistance that can be provided.

The "Player Optimization" tool is exactly what it says--its a Player Optimization tool. Do not run it on a General Purpose PC--it would not make sense. In any case--all of the changes can be undone. [it has an "undo" function]

Monday, 11/26/2007 -- by Cristian Balan. Subject: undo function, nice :)

Hi, let's see...
1) I'm only user on my PC (and another's in my case) and this is admin account :)
2) I have www.free-av.com AV (base solution freeware without firewall; I already install the CM with this AV before format this PC), however I put off my Win (only) firewall.
3) Is a fresh formatted system...

The 'undo' function can be used when you know this function... in my case I run the optimisation 2 times and that go rewrite the first 'undo file date'... :)

now it's ok...

Saturday, 01/19/2008 -- by Cristian Balan. Subject: Scala must complete the FAQ with msvcr71.dll

I have same problem with another HP server with Win 2000 Server. I uninstall the CM and then try to reinstall all. When my browser go to http://localhost:8080/ContentManager give me error page not found.

So for correct that I go in the C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin , copy the file msvcr71.dll and paste this in the C:\WINNT\system32 folder.

After that all is OK.

But I think, Scala must complete with other information in the FAQ Uninstall CM guide ( http://www.scala.com/infochannel-content-manager-5-faq/uninstall-content-manager... ) because after CM uninstall, the *.dll file missing from the system32 folder and can't reinstall fine the CM when need this.
