changing the channel of a tv feed using a scala script

Tuesday, 03/20/2007 -- by Anthony. Subject: changing the channel of a tv feed using a scala script

Man oh Man, ok all I have to do is figure this out and I can relax for a bit.

So here goes nothing. I have a net manager pc with designer, tv tuner ex and a tv tuner card(leadtek winfast tv2000 xp expert) on it in an office, i have a player pc with tv tuner ex and another tv tuner card on it(same tv tuner card as above) across the hall in a rack that also has a tv feed connected via RF from a vcr or satillite. both pc's are connected via LAN. My scenario is this, i want to be able set up a schedule were say 4-5 different channels are played throughout the day. ie from 9-11am it shows CITY-TV, from 11-1pm it will switch to and show FOX-News, from 1-3pm it switches to and shows CNN, etc. all the while this scala "special event" is playing over a script. Is this at all possible? and if so, how can i go about doing it?? And please, please don't refer me to the release notes!!! It's not in there.

Thanks!

If its ONLY showing TV-channels you want (maybe with a logo-overlay), I wrote a piece of software to do this, no need for IC3/NM/Player etc. Although I think Scala IC3 can do this I haven't tried it(and can't try at the moment). If the channels don't switch you might want to check if you put the override settings flag in the TV-ex in the designer.

hey thanks, but unfortunetly for this, we want to stick with just scala software, no third party products. you see when we first started this project, we were told by our scala re-seller that it would be possible to do this using scala. however i think they were just talking out of their ass because they have not been able to give us any support in making this happen. ive tried on 3 occasions to get tech support directly from scala, but was told that our scala re-seller must provide the support which is impossible because they have no idea what they are doing . so i am left to coming here, which has provided me with a wealth of support for most of my questions. (thanks) unforunetly no one has really been able to help me with the channel change issue with any great success.

Monday, 03/26/2007 -- by John Schilling. Subject: The functionaity is in the software...

There are plenty of customer deployments that do this type of thing 7x24.

The TV-Tuner.EX's Scala-Script programming is not my area of speciality--but I know that it can be programmically controlled. We document the API's and I know that the function calls work as documented.

I did a little inventigating w/r to your reseller. While not "gray market"--your reseller is about as close as it gets. They were grandfathered in prior to the new training requirements.

Your best options:

(1) Attend training yourself. [likely a good idea in any case] There are classes monthly in the U.S.--on the East Coast, Philadelphia, and on the West Cost. [LA] I don't know the European schedule--but I suspect that Netherlands also has monthy training classes.

(2) Hire a Scala-Script/Graphics Designer-Consultant to build your script/deployment solution. Either the Scala-Services Group or one of our VAR's who also "moonlights" as a custom script designer for other Scala VAR's/Customers.

(3) Spend the time and skull-sweat in figuring out how the Atom works.

What happens when you display three TV-Clips in a row--each set to a different channel? Have you looked at the Scala-Script source code that the GUI generates??? What happens when you run a script that loops a single page and changes the variable that the GUI-created Scala-Script passed to change the channel?

"Technical Support" is for fixing problems/bugs and assisting customers with things that either don't function correctly-fully or are interaction related with 3rd party items in a way we could not anticipate..

"Script Consulting" is "Doing things for people when they lack the time and or training to do it them selves". We have some good Graphic Artists/Scala-Script Guru's who do this sort of thing for a living.

"Training" is for teaching people how to fish for themselves. Some people learn better in a classroom setting--either they are more verbal/visual or need the "gentle hand" or need the excuse that gets them away from distrations in their normal work environment!

"Tech Support" can not be a substitute for "Training". [Consulting possibly--but what happens the next time you want to do something that is "new"/unqiue?]

This is a "customer forum." Not Technical support. Not Consulting. Not Training. I help out from time to time when I have a few spare moments. This is not my Job and I am not paid to do this. I just think that its a more useful way to spend my time when I am waiting for a compile to finish or an ISO to build or a DVD to finish burning.

You might have been better served by another Scala VAR. [one who actually sent people to training--but that is a "Sales Channel" issue and beyond my pay grade.]

Well, Anthony, if you need help from the Netherlands, you can mail me at marvin@pthgroep.nl

I'm sure we can solve your problem.

Thursday, 03/29/2007 -- by Marvin Droogsma. Subject: Solution

Hi Anthony, the solution is on its way by mail (due to servertrouble about 12 hours after now), so I thougth you might be reading here.

I've included screenshots in my mail but this is what I think solves your problem:

Goto the video-tab on the TV-element.

-          Check Override Player Setup
-          Select Tuner as Video Source
-          Select Channel you wish to view

I couldn't find these settings in your script, so the player does only what was set in the player as default (e.g. just one channel)
Now you can schedule several elements at the same spot in one page or schedule it on several pages (if the surrounding content always the same, use one page, makes changing content easier)

Hope this helps!

If so please say so on the forum, so the subject can be closed.
