I just received a file (AVI) from our designers, but I cannot get it to either play in Media Player 9 or open the file in Scala ICDesigner 3.
I get the following error in WMP9:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer. It may be in use by another program or it may not be functioning properly.
I get the following error in ICDesigner 3:
Scala Error: 304.7
Script "<untitled>" played incorrectly.
Script "<untitled>". Page "<untitled>":
Analysing video format of "ScalaArt:\Scala Scripts\Ads\Fortis.avi".
DirectShow Error(80040217)
No combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection.
However, on an XP PC the AVI file works OK. I am thinking it may be a combination of codecs and WMP10 on the XP PC.
ICDesigner box's specs:
OS: Server 2003
Media Player: WMP9
DirectX: 9c
Motherboard: ASUSTEK P4SP-MX REV 1.xx
Processsor: 2.40 GHz Pentium 4
RAM: 1024 MB
Video: integrated SIS graphics adapter
Sound: integrated SoundMax audio
.
Could anyone help me to resolve this problem? Thanks.
The solution is simple: Have whomever provided you with the file re-encode it as a proper WMV9-compliant file.
Next--stop running Designer in Windows Server 2003. There is no technically valid reason why this would be a "desirable" option and several important reasons why this is a very poor OS selection for running Designer.
Also--SiS integrated graphics is a really, really, really, really, REALLY, [inappropriate/poor/(not-good)/"BAD"] option in a video sub-system for any form of multimedia Playback. [...unfortunately the English language lacks the appropriate, polite, descriptive words to properly express the magnitude of how ill-suited SiS integrated graphics are for proper DirectX function--maybe somebody fluent in Arabic, Yiddish, German or Russian (for the poetry) could assist in this effort?]

Actually, this was a box I *inherited* so I'm just having to make do. Totally share your views on SIS/VIA integrated video...Actually, what I did was install the CinePak codec that was missing...It solved the problem.
As for instaling on XP, the XP boxes here , * inherited as well * do not have parrallel ports; however, I've just realized that it is the NetManager dongle that is the USB, so I'll give it a whirl.
Just to check though; NetManager on Server 2003 should be OK, right?
What is important for Content Manager 5's and NetManager3's is _stability_ and I/O performance.
These are Server applications--where Video Cards and AUdip CODEC's are important for Designer and Player--RAID for Disks, Memory, and Network-I/O is what is important in the Server component. So: Windows _SERVER_ 2000 or 2003, good RAID-1+0, etc.
