Here are some basic steps to plan and execute a successful installation. 1. Preparation - things you should do BEFORE arriving on-site. -Choose Hardware options (eg: VGA adapter) -Install and Configure OS and Drivers -Choose network architecture (recommended Direct FTP, which requires fixed IP addresses) -Set PC name and IP Address -Install VNC (TightVNC recommended) -Configure Player Options (connectio, video res, etc.) -Install EXes -Set to auto-login as Player account -Do a test reboot to make sure the Player can recover from a power failure 2, Installation - things you do to install and test the player on-site. -Plug in and turn on -Test playback on display (make sure resolutions match) -Test if Player can receive a Job (use Send Content) -Test if Player can play a new Script (send a simple Main Script) -Test audio/video playback (send a more complex Main Script) -Test any special features (send a Script that tests EXes, VBScripts, etc.) -Send the actual Main Script 3. Troubleshooting - things you may need to do if there are problems. -Check versions and log file -Diagnostics to isolate problems |
Bring an extra keyboard, mouse (preferrably wireless) and monitor, but also install VNC on all Players and bring a laptop. That really works when you have 20 Players so you don't have to keep plugging and unplugging. Do as much configuration as possible before you arrive on-site. If you have Players on different size displays, try to standardize resolutions as much as possible so content can be reused among the different screens. Make sure the customer has an authoring system with the same base configuration as the Player, or has an actual Player in their office they can test with. After you finish installation, if you had to do any major configuration changes on-site, document them thoroughly and make a backup the Player's hard drive. Make Test Scripts that match the resolution of your Players. |
